Universal or original connection?
Modern cars require a special electronic device – a module – to correctly connect the trailer’s electrical system. This ensures that the trailer’s lighting system works correctly and that the car’s original systems operate smoothly.
Installation of the module is compulsory for all cars under 10 years old and recommended for older models. We always fit modules because it makes the trailer lighting system more reliable and safer.
Universal module: characteristics and limitations
The universal module is suitable for most cars, but only performs the basic function of controlling the trailer lighting. It does not communicate with the car’s electronic systems and does not inform the on-board computer when the trailer is connected. This leads to a number of limitations:
- Parking sensors and other auxiliary systems may not automatically switch off, which can cause inconvenience when reversing.
- The car’s stability control system (ESP) does not detect the trailer, which means that the trailer stability control system (TSP) is not activated.
- In some cars, incorrect connections can cause error messages on the on-board computer.
Although parking sensors can be manually deactivated in most cars, the lack of connection to the stability and security systems makes the universal module a less preferred solution.
Original module: security and car integration
We always recommend opting for the original module, especially for cars under 5 years old. Modern cars are equipped with advanced safety systems, such as ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and TSP (Trailer Stability Program), which help to prevent side-slip and rollover when driving with a trailer.
TSP is an extension of ESP that analyses the trailer’s movement and prevents it from sliding sideways by automatically adjusting the car’s braking force. However, in order for TSP to work correctly, the car needs to ‘understand’ that the trailer is coupled.
To do this, it is necessary to install the original module. Only in this case:
- The car’s safety systems activate the driving mode with the trailer.
- The TSP will start to work immediately after the trailer is connected.
- All the car’s electronic systems communicate correctly with the trailer.
If a universal module is used, or if the original module is installed but not activated (coded) in the on-board computer, the car will not detect the trailer and the TSP will remain inactive. This increases the risk of losing control of the trailer in difficult road conditions.
Why choose installation in a Convenient Car?
At Mugav Auto, we have all the necessary equipment to correctly code the original modules for almost all makes of car. That’s why it pays to trust us with the installation, especially when it comes to modern cars. Other workshops may not be able to cope with the coding, which can lead to incorrect functioning of the security systems.
Summary
The use of the original module when fitting a hitch is not just an optional extra, but an essential safety feature. It ensures the correct operation of all the car’s electronic systems, including ESP and TSP, providing maximum safety for the driver and passengers. Choosing the original module is an investment in reliability, comfort and road safety.
