This is one of the most common questions we get from customers – and it’s a valid concern. Many car owners worry that installing a tow bar might ruin the look of their vehicle, leave a noticeable cut in the bumper, or simply look unattractive. This question is especially important if you want to keep your car looking as original and clean as possible.
Yes, a cut is usually required
In most cases, a bumper cut is required – whether you’re installing a detachable or a fixed tow bar. This is necessary to make the tow bar functional and allow the tow ball to extend from under the bumper.
With detachable models like the Steinhof W5, the cut is typically made in the lower, hidden part of the bumper. When the tow ball is removed, nothing is visible from the outside – no hole, no socket. The cut is only visible if you crouch down and look underneath the vehicle. Installation is done precisely using templates provided by the manufacturer to ensure a clean and minimal result.
If you’re installing a fixed tow bar, the tow ball is always visible. A cut is still made in the bottom of the bumper, but the visible part of the tow bar fully covers the cut. In this case, you’ll see the tow ball, but not the cut itself.
There are some exceptions
There are a few specific car models where the bumper shape or design requires the tow bar to be positioned higher or at a different angle. In such cases, the cut might be partially visible, even with careful installation. This mostly applies to fixed tow bars that need to be placed higher to function properly. In these situations, the cut may be more noticeable from certain viewing angles.
If the appearance of your vehicle is especially important to you, we strongly recommend consulting with our team before installation. We can evaluate your vehicle model in advance and advise you on the best solution, as well as what to expect in terms of visibility.
Summary
Installing a tow bar almost always requires a cut in the bumper, but in most cases it is not visible. With detachable options like the Steinhof W5, your vehicle keeps its original appearance when the tow ball is removed. Fixed tow bars remain visible, but the cut is hidden behind the tow bar’s structure. In some cases, the cut may be more visible – that’s why it’s always best to ask us in advance.
If you want a solution that’s functional, safe, and discreet – a detachable tow bar like the Steinhof W5 is an excellent choice.
